THE JOY OF FEAR

Intention: to underscore the range of emotional perspectives implicit in the visual sequence. The dreamy innocence and apprehensive gentleness of the children and women ‘gives way’ to the hard masculinity, fear and violent danger of the bull-riding. Ultimately we are left with the sad confusion, fear, and innocence of the bull.

ARISING VISION

The cinematographer’s concept:

“...an emotional journey... Starting with course textures and harder surfaces, the individual moves through a variety of spaces until they embrace lighter more malleable elements. Unfolding ...with bold, hesitant, embracive and gentle touch I hoped to demonstrate an emotional arc inspired by the pathway out of anxiety.”

Intention: to musically capture this arc toward increasing lightness, freedom and expanse.

VISUAL POEMS:

These short films, were shot and edited by Masters students in cinematography at AFTRS. My brief was to compose for a live 13 piece ensemble (strings, winds, brass and harp), to create a front and centre musical interpretation an expressive visual ‘story’ that had no dialogue or narrative.
